Who is God? (2)

"Getting to know God the Father"

"Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?" Malachi 2:10

Not that there is a strict division of labor, but each person of the Triune God (Trinity) is generally thought to do certain things. Here is what one of the church's oldest creeds says about God the Father:

"I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of Heaven and earth."

As we will see, all three persons of the Godhead participated in creation, but God the Father ordained it and created it.

God the Father did not just set the world in motion, but continues to be involved in it:

"Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reapnor gather into barns, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" Matthew 6:26

What kind of Father would abandon a child after his birth? Not God the Father. After creating everything, He continues to sustain, not just the birds, but everytnhing and everyone in it.

Finally, there's one more work of His many that we want to consider here.

"For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

God the Father loves each us so much that He created a plan for our salvation and implemented it. What was this costly plan? He commanded His Son to become man, be betrayed by a friend, be beaten unmercifully, be nailed to a cross where he would bear the guilt and punishment for every sin committed by every sinner who would ever live, and then rise from the dead victoriously for the forgiveness of sins. He is the perfect Father; our perfect Father.

What do you think is the work of God the Son? Jot down some thoughts and then let's study together.
