Life-Threatening Super-Hero Illusions

Super-Hero or boy?

"When they finally arrived, I excitedly put on the caped shirt, strapped the belt around my waist, and climbed the peach tree so I could get to the top of the garage."

Life-threatening Super-Hero Illusions

In the late fifties there were two super-heroes that children idolized: Mighty Mouse and Superman. Often on the back of cereal boxes there were special “items” you could order that prompted kids to coerce their parents into buying the cereal. The two that caught my eye were a Mighty Mouse t-shirt (with a cape) and a Superman belt. When they finally arrived, I excitedly put on the caped shirt, strapped the belt around my waist, and climbed the peach tree so I could get to the top of the garage. I then walked to the edge of the roof and jumped, hoping to fly. Much to my surprise, I dropped like a rock. By the grace of God, I didn’t dive head-first! So much for being a super-hero.
