"I will follow You wherever You may go!"
"By this we may know that we are in Him (Jesus): Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked." I John 2:5b-6
Walk "in the same way" Jesus walked? That is impossible! Of course, it is! Obviously, this was not John's point. Notice a few verses earlier he says:
"My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you might not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice/bore the guilt and punishment) for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world." I John 2:1-2
The point is, after we have been delivered from our sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus we no longer want to offend our saving God with our sins. We want to be like Jesus when He walked the earth - obedient, loving, forgiving and pleasing the Father with every thought, word and deed.
"Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny himself and take up his cross and FOLLOW ME." Mark 8:34
"I have set you an EXAMPLE that you should DO AS I HAVE DONE for you." John 13:15
"Follow my example as I FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST." I Corinthians 11:1
I originally wrote these five questions in the late 1980's. I summarized these verses with the question, "What would Jesus do?" Never thought of creating a bracelet with the acronym "WWJD" on it. Another missed financial opportunity! (Ha Ha) However, it is a great question to help us in our decision-making process.
The questions so far:
1. What does God's Word say?
2. Is the love of Christ motivating me?
3. What would Jesus do?
Our study continues in "Five Biblical Decision Making Questions/Principles (5)."
