Who is God? (4)

"Getting to know God the Holy Spirit"

"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another helper that He may abide with you forever---even the Spirit of truth..." John 14:16-17a

We have Identified God the Father and the Son as performing the work of creation. Now watch this:

"You send forth Your Spirit and they are created." Psalm 104:30

That's right, the Holy Spirit also participated in creation. Creation was literally a Triune experience. But what else is the Work of the Holy Spirit? Let's focus on just three more works.

"All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God..." II Timothy 3:16a

"...for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." II Peter 1:21

It was the Holy Spirit who inspired men to write the Scriptures. For this reason the Scriptures are not human documents but divine ones.

OK, the Holy Spirit was active in creation and inspired the Word of God. What else?

"Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." I Corinthians 12:3

In other words, no one can truly believe in Jesus, actually say Jesus is His Lord and mean it, except by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit - creator, Scripture inspirer and faith creator. Let's consider one more work.

"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, whom you have from God and you are not your own. For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and your spirit, which are God's." I Corinthians 6:19-20

The Holy Spirit lives inside of every believe to empower him or her to "glorify God." It is impossible to glorify God with our own strength; we must have the divine strength of the Holy Spirit. To summarize:

  • The Holy Spirit is the creator

  • The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures

  • The Holy Spirit uses the Word He inspired to bring us to faith

  • The Holy Spirit empowers us to live the Christian life found in the Word

The Triune God: three distinct persons, equal in power and glory, and yet only one God. What a privilege to believe in and be blessed by the only true God!
